Sempai Joe Johnston started training Kyokushin Karate in 1998. He won the Canadian championship in 2003, and also represented Canada that year at the World Championships in Japan. He received his Shodan in 2004 and Nidan in 2017. He founded the Edmonton Strathcona dojo in 2013. The dojo is family-focused and offers classes at Strathcona High School four times a week. Edmonton Strathcona hosts the annual Edmonton Cup tournament.
