Mike Sandford

Started training in karate in 1979 in Shotokan style,participating in numerous tournaments between 1982-1987 was graded to Shodan by Shihan Masatoshi Nakayama in1986.Studied Akido 1992 before starting Kyokushin in 1993 studying with Sensei Pete Fradley.Graded for Shodan 2000 then Nidan in 2005,has lead a very active Karate life attending scores of local and international training events including multiple visits to train in Hawaii at seminar’s hosted by Shihan Bobby Lowe.As well since 2001 has participated in both local and international tournaments as a corner judge or centre ref. Presently grading for Sandan, and acting as dojo operator for South Delta dojo.

Greg Creech

Started karate in 1979 at St. Anne’s church in Richmond-Attended 1st canadian kyokushin championships in1983 at McRoberts school in Richmond,made the move to SouthArm dojo in 1983,Achieved rank of shodan in 1988 ,the same year that he fought in the kyokushin Commonwealth tournament in Australia .Took on leadership role in SouthDelta dojo along with Sensei Les Neilson in 1993,Achieved rank of nidan in 1995.

Daryl Hunter

At nineteen sempia Daryl started his martial arts carear studying tae kwon do under master sun choi
in richmond,attaining the rank blue belt/red stripe.Daryl trained for a year and a half before taking two years off to pursue other avenues.
Next Daryl trained for two years in shuto ryu in the tsawwassen dojo.Attaining the rank of yellow belt,was not satisfactory and something was missing in the training.
After being introduced to sensei Tony Severs, Daryl started training at sea island in dec of 1986.
Through many trainings,tournaments, seminars,camps and gradings sempai Daryl was awarded his
shodan in 1994.

Bill Dodds

Started his karate training in Jan 1996 at the age of 49 under Sensei Les Neilson and Sensei Greg Creech.He attended several summer and winter camps,Calgary and Hawaii seminars as well as black belt conferences.He has corner judged in local tournaments,the Canadian championships and the Vancouver Cup with the highlight being the Woman’s World Championship in New York in 2002.He has travelled to 3 World Championships in Tokyo Japan having memorable experiences and making lifelong friends.He retired from a 35 year long banking career at age 60 and took courses to become a personal trainer,working for theCorporation of Delta for 5 years.Bill now spends 1 or 2 days a week working for the bank and golfs on average 3 days a week year round,He obtained his shodan in 2001 and his Nidan in 2005.

Georgina Salisbury

Started Kyokushin in 1993 studying with Sensei Pete Fradley graded for Shodan in 2005, has been actively participating in numerous training courses including multiple visits to Hawaii to train with Shihan Bobby Lowe, as well holds her certification as a corner judge and has had the opportunity to participate in that role at local tournaments.

Scott Somers

Scott began studying Kyokushin Karate at the age of 10 at the South Delta Dojo under the instruction of Sempai Les Nielsen and Sempai Greg Creech in 1995. Diving head first into the seniors class Scott gained great respect and admiration for the Kyokushin way. In his early years of training Scott competed in a number of local and national tournaments. Through his years in high school and collage Scott remained dedicated, focused and trained regularly. He found karate to be a great way to maintain mental clarity and focus even under the most taxing and stressful times. Scott had been assisting in the junior and senior class for a number of years and in 2005 he received the rank of shodan. Continuing to attend camps, clinics and conferences on a regular basis Scott strives to expand his knowledge of all aspects of karate. Scott believes it is his responsibility to his students to continue to learn, test new techniques and expand his abilities to help them grow. He tries to bring elements of physics, kinetics, biology and health into his teachings. Scott believes that Kyokushin Karate is not a simple art just of kicks, punches and kata, it is about seeing the connection of all elements and how they can be utilized together for maximum effect. Latin proverb: by learning you will teach; by teaching you will understand.

Jeff Greig

I started martial arts with Judo at the North Delta Judo Club whereover 10 years. In university I was an active participant in my school’s mixed martial arts club. I started training in Kyokushin Karate in 2006, where I actively volunteer within the club, assisting with the junior class and coaching our fighters during tournaments. I have attended several of Kyokushin’s training camps as well throughout the last few years.

Rob Sonnenberg

I started my training in Kyokushin karate in the fall of 1996 with the South Delta dojo and I still train here on a regular basis. I have been active in sports all of my life and still play hockey but I had no other martial arts experience prior to starting Kyokushin karate, which I discovered after being introduced to it by friends. My first instructors were the late Sensei Les Neilsen and Sempai Greg Creech both of whom became great friends of mine. I have attended the World Championships in Tokyo in 1999 and 2003 along with other members of our club and I have also attended numerous Black and Brown belt conferences that are held in Banff. Along with attendance at a variety local training sessions I have also attended many Summer Camps and Winter Camps throughout the years gaining much knowledge and creating friendships along the way and I have also participated in local tournaments and in the Canadian tournament as an official and as a volunteer. Kyokushin Karate continues to be a challenge for me both physically and mentally as I strive to develop a deeper understanding of the Martial Way.

Sensei Pete Fradley started the South Delta Dojo in the late 1980′s at the Delta Secondary School.

This location was where Sempai’s Mike Sandford and Georgina Salisbury started studying Kyokushin karate in 1993.

Sensei Pete’s departure, moved to Calgary and opened the Calgary Dojo, in 1994 created the opportunity for Sensei Les Neilson and Sempai Greg Creech to assume the teaching duties at the dojo. Both Sensei Les and Sempai Greg had been training at the Richmond Dojo.

The dojo moved to it’s new location at Delta Christian School in 1995 where Sensei Les had filled the role as head instructor and dojo operator with great success. This included the creation of the annual IKOKC Kick-a-thon which is the largest contributor of funds to the IKOKC.

Sensei Les taught over 1000 students in the span of his instructional career with the promotion of 4 black belts . With his untimely passing in 2012, Sempai Mike Sandford has assumed the role of dojo operator and shares the instructional responsibilities with 5 other black belts.

The dojo is active in tournament competition training as well as offering excellent Karate training to a wide spectrum of students in a friendly family atmosphere
