History of the Dojo
The Sea Island Dojo opened its doors in January 1985 after Sensei Tony Severs handed the Richmond Dojo over Shihan Stuart Corrigal in December 1984.

Many of the people living in Burkville approached Sensei Tony, asking him to open a local dojo at Sea Island because there was not alot of activities for the children to take part in around that area at that time.

The Sea Island Dojo has been successfully running since that time, having countless numbers of karate-ka participating in training Kyokushin Karate, developing strong bonds amongst club members and families.

Terry Fredlund :
Terry began training in 1991 at the Sea Island dojo with Sensei Tony Severs, joining her husband, older son and nephew. Shortly afterwards her younger son and younger daughter joined. Although these partners have found other pursuits, she continues to train and to teach at the Sea Island dojo. As the children are no longer children, Terry regularly attends winter camp, summer camp, Calgary seminars, local tournaments, tournaments in the interior, black belt camps, Hawaiian summer camps, and once trained at Honbu in Tokyo. She received her black belt in August 1999, is qualified as an international judge, and has completed the theory for level 1 and 2 of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).
Jim Slater :
Jim began training Kyokushin in January 1991, with some previous experience training Shotokan in his teens. What began as a mutual activity with his children; Jim has continued training even after his oldest have moved on to other activities, reaching his Shodan in 1999. His business experience and qualifications have recently been put to use assisting Kyokushin Canada with strategic planning and reorganization.

Training regularly at the Sea Island Dojo, Jim also regularly trains at winter and summer camp, attends seminars, judges at tournaments and participates in a wide variety of activities in the organization. One of his current projects is to bring music and rhythmn into Kyokushin Karate with his unique "Ondo" class.
Jeremy Russel :
Jeremy began training in 1984, at the South Arm Dojo, with Sensei Tony Severs. He moved the next year, with Sensei Tony, to start a new dojo on Sea Island. Jeremy competed in many tournaments growing up, placing in the top three on many different occasions. He now finds coaching his students in the tournaments just as satisfying as competing. Jeremy received his Black Belt in 2000. He attends as many Camps and tournaments as possible throughout the year, as well as any demos or Self Defence classes put on by the Sea Island dojo.
Janice Shiho :
Janice began training with Sensei Tony Severs at the Sea Island Dojo in September 1992. She regularly attends Summer and Winter Camps and has participated as a competitor and judge in many local kata and kumite tournaments including tournaments in the Interior of B.C. She has had the opportunity to train at 2 North American Black Belt Camps/Conferences and at seminars in Calgary and in Hawaii. She attended the 6th World Tournament in Tokyo, Japan and while in Japan was able to train at Honbu. On many occasions she has assisted Sensei Tony with karate demonstrations and Women's Self Defence classes for the Community of Richmond. She received her Shodan and became a certified International Judge in August 1999. She currently continues to train and teach at the Sea Island Dojo in Richmond with her passion for teaching adults and especially the young children the "Ways" of Kyokushin Karate.
Daryl Hunter :
Daryl started training in December 1986 with Sensei Tony Severs. Although he has trained other styles of Martial Arts, Daryl took to Kyokushin right away, and became a Shodan in 1991. Daryl competed in many tournaments up to the age of 32, when he fought in Montreal. Since then Daryl is enjoying training regularly, and teaching whenever he can. He also regularly attends tournaments and Summer camps.
