Mission Statement
|
Kyokushin Karate is an art offering many things

Sean Kohnke - Head Instructor :
|
|
He has been training martial arts since the age of 13. He first started
training Shito Ryu until he achieved his yellow belt. He wanted something
more realistic so then started training Jeet Kune Do. He trained for about
a year there and liked the realism but missed the traditional Japanese
training. He then found out about Kempo karate from a friend. The same
dojo Ben Bertrom started. Sean earned up to his green belt in Kempo,
training about 3 years there, until the club’s closing. He was disappointed
and searched everywhere until a friend told him about Kyokushin karate. Sean
has been training Kyokushin ever since and joined at the age of 18, earning
himself his blue belt in 3 months due to the very similar training styles and
fighting as Kempo Karate. In 1997 Sean moved to Vancouver and trained under
Sempai Tats Nakamura for approximately 4 years. Sean has had the privilege of
training under many different instructors through-out the Okanagan as well
over the years. Sempai Terry Shivaz, Sempai Brent Parker, Sempai Lyle Zimmerman,
Sempai Eddy Deuschle, and Sempai Ken Hampson. Sean has entered numerous
tournaments since he started training Kyokushin. Many with excellent
records:
2003-Newton Tournament (1st place open division)
2002-Canadian Championships (Kyokushin Karate Champion Open Division)
2001-Vancouver Cup 2001 (Third place middle-weight Open Division)
2001-South Okanagan Kyokushin Championships (First place Open Division)
2001-Newton Tournament (1st place Open Division)
2000-Canadian Championships (2nd Place light-weight division)
1999-Langley Goodwill tournament (1st place middle-weight Division)
