History of the Dojo
The Bearspaw club was started in 2000 by Stephen Gobby. In January 2005 Brad Gillespie became head instructor of the club. The club offers training for students from the Bearspaw, Cochrane and Northwest Calgary areas.

Brad Gillespie-Head Instructor:

Brad Gillespie began training in 1987 in Vernon, British Columbia under Sensei Herb Milton. In 1991 he moved to Hawaii for 4 months to train under Shihan Bobby Lowe (8th dan). In 1999 he moved to Calgary, Alberta where he assumed operations of the Calgary Club. He was promoted to sandan in October 2004, and in January 2005, took over operations of the Bearspaw dojo.

Sensei Brad has participated and placed in many national and international events including: 1991 Canadian Heavyweight Title, 1991 All Hawaiian Open Champion, and 1997 Canadian Open Champion. Brad was also on the Canadian Teams for North American Championships in 1995, 97, 98 and the 5th, 6th, and 7th World Tournaments in 1991, 95 and 1999. He has placed in every Canadian Kata tournament he has attended.

His international training experience includes seminars at Mitsumine (Japan), Hawaii, and all North American black belt conferences. He is an internationally certified official, and most recently, was a coach for the 2003 Canadian Team at the World Tournament in Japan.
Brad's fondest memories include training with Shihan Lowe, shaking Sosai Oyama's hand in 1989 when he was in Canada, and being a part of the 1995 Canadian Team in Japan.
