Stuart Corrigal began training Kyokushin Karate in March 1968 with the Richmond Kyokushin Karate Club, a branch school of the Vancouver Kyokushin Karate Club. Presently he is Branch Chief of the Canadian Kyokushin Karate Organization responsible for the Western & Central regions. As well as Head Instructor of the Richmond Kyokushin Karate Club, South Arm Dojo. Stuart has traveled extensively throughout the world training competing, officiating and conducting IKO Officiating Seminars. He competed in the 14th All Japan Championships and the 3rd World Tournament in Tokyo.
As a member of the Board of Directors for the IKOKC, he draws upon almost 45 years of training in Kyokushin Karate and 35 years of public service as an Environmental Public Health professional (EPHP), of which 20 years were in management, 10 of those in senior management. During his tenure as senior management, he was the Assistant Director of Environmental Public Health for the Interior Health Authority in British Columbia. In this position he was responsible for the co-management of 125 employees and a $10m annual budget, in a highly diverse portfolio of environmental practice in Air, Water, Food, Healthy Built Environments, Communicable Disease Investigation, Environmental Assessment & Management, & Chronic Disease Intervention. This included policy development, service delivery, professional development and teaching professional staff, including EPHPs, professional engineers, and professionals specializing in tobacco reduction, water treatment, community development, food safety & security. A significant portion of his responsibility was liaising with local, regional, provincial, state & federal governments, NGOs, First Nations governments and corporations.
Don has helped develop the current administrative and policy structure for the IKOKC. He actively participates in the development and teaching of curriculum and pedagogical technique for the various aspects of Kyokushin Karate. He is currently undertaking a multi-year project of the standardization of kihon, kata and goshin jitsu within the IKOKC and its dojo instructors, through ongoing research on the scientific, technical, engineering, psychological, mental & historical foundations of Kyokushin Karate. He is also involved in the training and certification of IKOKC members in tournament judging and refereeing.
Don is the senior instructor in the IKOKC. He has trained Kyokushin Karate since February 1968. In that time he has trained with the late Sosai Mas Oyama, 10th dan, founder of Kyokushin: the late Shihan Bobby Lowe, 8th dan, and Kancho Shokei Matsui, 8th dan, current head of the IKO. In addition, he has trained judo, collegiate freestyle wrestling, boxing, & kickboxing, and represented Canada at the 14th All Japan Championships in 1982 & 3rd World Tournament in 1984 in Tokyo. He is an IKO Registered Referee since 1988.
